Its December now and lots has changed since the last post. I’m not as good as keeping up with posts as I had originally hoped.

We are camping with Shannon. Full time in the motorhome. She LOVES it. I would say that her favorite part is being able to be outside most of the day. Here at the campground she can be tied out to the picnic table, where at the condo she can’t be outside at all unless she is on the leash.

Each day begins with a walk that is at least an hour long. Sometimes we take our walk together, and then meet up with the “ladies walking group.” Their walk is about 45 minutes. By the time we get back to camp she is pretty tuckered out. She loves walking with the ladies. It’s her “pack walk.”

After her walk she hangs out, outside by the picnic table and watches the world go by. Lots of people walking, golf carts passing by too. There are birds to watch, in addition to a cattle field accross the street. She is in here element!

About noon, we take the mile walk to check for mail at the office. And then usually around 4 we go on another walk with her friend “Biscuit.” Biscuit is a 2 year old black lab. They LOVE each other. The first 10 minutes of the “walk” is usually the two of them biting one another on the ear and rolling over on top of each other. Its really a cute picture.

At night, she is content to sit below Russ’s chair as he is able to drape his arm over the side and give her a continuous belly rub.

Talk about a dogs life!!!

It’s been awhile since I wrote about the girl and what she has been up to, but to give an excuse I would have to say we have been very busy!

Today however, we took another trip to the dog park.  I have brought her their the past 2 days but nobody else has been there.  It’s been nice to let Shannon off leash and let her run around, but nothing takes the place of doggie socialization.

Today I arrive, again to an empty park, but shortly after arriving 2 other people/dogs arrived.  First a chocolate lab named Maggie who only wanted to play fetch with her owner.  (She barely even knew that Shannon existed. )  And then a medium sized dog named Mia, of course with owner in tow.   She was more then willing and excited to chase Shannon around the park.

We spent about an hour there, watching the dog play, and ourselves chatting about the weather, dog food, dog toys, dog training, dog treats etc.  It was nice to see Shannon have a positive experience at the park.  (Or was it nice that I had a positive experience at the park….)  Anyway – after about an hour a 4th dog and owner showed up.  He was a larger shepard mix that was VERY interested in Shannon.  A little overwhelming for her at times as I noted her tail tucked between her legs and her hackles up when he got to close.

All in all it was a good time – for both Shannon an me!

It doesn’t seem possible, but it’s only been 4 weeks since Shannon arrived.  She is doing so well – and learning so fast.  She’ll be 6 month on the 1st of September.

I looked back at her pictures – the first day she was home.  She was so small!  I don’t think that she has gotten much bigger then when she arrived – although it seems like she has.

I know that I still need to take advantage of her need to be near me.  Teach her better how to “come” when she is called.  I’m so proud – she is doing great with the leash walking.  Learning a bit more every day.

Here is today picture:

A dog is a dog is a dog!

A human on the other hand is a complicated creature.  With emotions, feeling, thoughts, and whole bunch of other “crap” floating around that can influence behavior.

I just picked up this great book about walking on a leash and dogs that pull.  Wow – when you get right down to it – it’s really very simple philosophy!  We as human’s “think” that our dogs “think” when in reality they just respond.  They respond to the actions of others.  Simple as simple can be.

If you hit your dog everytime it pulls, it’s going to want to get away from you.  And how does the dog get away from you – by pulling on the leash to get away.  (By the way – I DO NOT hit my dog!!!)

You really have to feed honey to the beast to make it do what you want.  Which is really just a learned response for the dog.

I’ve spent quite a few hours walking Shannon while she has been at the other end of the leash pulling.  And the more frustrated I get – the more she pulls.  However, when I just relax, and “DO” what I need to do to distract the dog from pulling – she is beautiful.  Walking beside me, or just trotting along enjoying the smells.  She might be a little ahead, she may be behind – but she it NOT pulling.   Wow – who would have thought!

So it’s really ME that’s learning all this.  Shannon is just responding.  And while yes, I agree, she is learng too – I think that the more I learn the smarter she will become!!

It’s been 3 weeks since Shannon arrived at the house.   She has been a gem every day!  She continues to grow each day and learn each day.  She is incredibly smart and is a sponge when it comes to learning.

The past 2 days I have been able to take her to this great place nearby to go walking.  She loves investigating and meeting the people and dogs at the park.  She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.  She kisses all the dogs!

I need to sign up for dog school.  I am in need of some tools to train this dog.   She loves to pull on the leash when we meet new people and dogs.  Other then that she is pretty good on the leash.   She behaves in the house – but that is to be expected – there are no distractions.

I know that it’s just time and patience and practice.  All of which I am not very good at – but I’ve no excuse, I have to be!  It’s only fair to the dog.  I think I will get online and order some good dog training books.  Those will be good tools.

There are only a few more days of August and kids will start going back to school.  And back to college.  We have a college nearby that I will start walking Shannon through.  That will get her use to people and perhaps help subside the enery she has when new people are around.

Shannon had such a good time at doggie daycare yesterday I figured I would take her to the local dog park.  I had heard about it from 2 of my neighbors, with mixed reviews, so I decided to find out for myself.

Having only seen one other dog park in my life I have to say I was quite impressed with the facility.  It is conveniently located about 5 miles from my house.  The park itself is very big, with a chain link fence about 6 feet high.  The park has 2 areas, one for big dogs and one for smaller dogs 20 pounds or less.  The larger area (for the big dogs) has 2 kiddie swimming pools and each of the areas has a tent with a bench under it so the humans can sit out of the sun.

When I arrived at the park, there were 2 very big dogs playing in the larger area.  Since I didn’t know how Shannon would react to the big dogs I decided to take her into the small area.  This way they could all smell each other from their sides of the fence.  I could also determine at this time if I wanted to put Shannon in with the big dogs.  By the way, Shannon is 31 pounds.

I’m glad that I did what I did!!  Both the dogs were much bigger then Shannon.  One was 91 pounds,  (The owner told me this) he had just lost 6 pounds.  The other dog was probably 60 pounds.  They sniffed through the fence and seemed to get along well.  That’s when the owner of the 91 pound dog said that he would bring his dog in the little dog area, on a leash, to see how they would do together.  I was agreeable to this.

Once off leash, the 91 pound dog (black german shepard) chased Shannon around the yard.  Poor Shannon had her tail between her legs and was desperate to get as close to me as possible.  Clearly she was very overwelmed and scared.  This “play” carried on for about 5 minutes, without Shannon looking any more settled so I politely asked the man to remove his dog.  He did so but I think he thought I was being “whimpy.”

A bit later, after Shannon and I played fetch, another dog came to the dog park.  This one was a little beagle, only about 20 pounds.  Apparently the man who owned this dog brought the beagle into the big dog area all the time – with no problem from the 91 pound dog.

I asked him if he would bring his dog in to play with Shannon and he agreed.  They chased each other around for a good long time.  Shannon was not fearful in any way and was a very good playing companion.

I left the dog park  about an hour later.  Shannon was all tuckered out from racing around the park.

I don’t feel like I did anything wrong by not having Shannon play with the “big dogs.”  I mean the 91 pound dog is 3 times here weight and size.  One false move from the big dog and Shannon would be toast.  If nothing else she could get easily hurt – and who do you think would be paying the vet bill.  Certianly not the owner of the big dog!

We will go back again – so that Shannon can have some more social time with her canine friends. But I have to say I much prefer “doggie daycare” where the “play” is supervised by professionals and the play friends are the same size as Shannon.

One thing I will mention….the owner of the big 91 pound black shepard also got his dog from Luck Pup Rescue!!

I dropped Shannon off at doggie daycare today for the first time.  I was afraid that she wouldn’t want to leave me but she followed the daycare assistant without any hesitation.

Shannon spent over 6 hours there.  They wanted to assess her and see how she would react to different situations.  I guess she passed since I was given the green light to bring her back anytime I wanted.

I also got a picture of her playing with a new doggie friend and a “hang it up on your refrigerator” piece of paper that listed her new doggie friends and the activities she participated in today.  It was all very cute.  (And of course it’s hung up on the frig – with the picture.)

When I picked her up we left the building and walked a bit – so she could go pee before we left.  When we finished she pulled back toward the front door of the building – clearly wanting to return for more fun.

I think I have found a great place for her to visit a couple times a week.  It will give her some social skills and exhaust her too.

Tomorrow Shannon goes to doggie day care for the first time.  I’m very excited for her……time to spend socializing with other dogs and PLAYING!!!

She needs a day away from me – and frankly I need a day away too.  Don’t get me wrong, I love her to pieces,  but I tell you…………..life without a dog one day – to life with a dog the next is very tiring.  And I am tired!!!

We are still working on her crate training.  I notice at work, when I have to leave her for a bit and it’s first thing in the morning it’s best to put her in a crate.  There she can’t tangle herself in her leash attempting to get to the door.  I hear her howling from the crate when i’m outside, but she does settle down after a couple of minutes.

Today she met more dogs.  She is very excited when she meets them and just wants to play.  This is a good thing!  I think she will have a fabulous time tomorrow!

Today after work, Shannon and I took a long…long walk.  It was delightful!!  The sun was shining, there was a nice breeze….it was (is) a perfect day!!

We walked for about 1/2 hour at this great park nearby – then we went down by the water where there was another dog playing.  I wasn’t sure how Shannon would react to the dog – but she was very interested, a bit shy, but quickly determined that she would be ok and the PLAYING was ON!

They chased each other around the beach and jumped in the water splashing.  She was such a happy girl.  Another dog came down to join in the fun, but he was a bit more timid and his owners took him away from the fun.

We were also visited by horses while at the beach area.  Shannon wasn’t sure what to think of them but she didn’t seem scared.  That’s Good!!!

We are now home again and she is taking a nap.  Clearly tuckered out from her adventure.

It was 2 weeks ago today that I picked Shannon up for foster care.  It seems like only yesterday – but it also seems like a life ago.

She has come out of her shell quite a bit since the first days….she is showing her real puppy-self all the time.   At work she greet all the people coming in the door, and only occasionally hides under my desk.  But she still pops her nose out so she can smell what is going on.

She is such a smart little girl too.  We are working on sit, down and wait. (stay)  She’s got the sit part down about 85%.  The down part about 50% and the wait part – well she’s got a ways to go.  I am determined to end every session on a positive note.

She’s a puller when it comes to leash walking but we are working on that too.

Shannon and Simon are learning to live together too.  The cat is not 100% certain of Shannon’s intentions but perhaps with a bit more time he will see that the dog is harmless and just wants to play.

Shannon is becoming a great member of our family and we look forward to lots of years of happy times and great memories.
